Using Google Maps in the Classroom

Google Maps present the perfect opportunity to explore "mashups" with your students.

In order to use Google Maps, you need to have a Google account (you may already have one).  If you need to get an account or log in to your accrount you can do that here: Google Accounts.

For more information on using Google Maps, go to the Maps Help Page.

To add your Flickr photos to your placemark:

  1. Go to Flickr and choose the photo you want to include.
  2. On the tool bar just above the photo, click on "All Sizes"
  3. Choose the size photo you want to include in the placemark (square, thumbnail, small, etc.)
  4. Scroll down and you will find two ways to use the photo in a blog or on a web site.  The second option is to "Grab the photo's URL." Copy the URL.
  5. Return to Google Maps and create a new map.
  6. Create a new placemark on your map.
  7. Click to edit the placemark in HTML (as opposed to plain text or rich text)
  8. Type in the code to put your picture into the placemark with the following syntax:
                <img src="replace this text with the URL you copied from your Flickr photo">

You can also use simple HTML tags to format text within your placemark. Examples:

<BR>=line break

<B></B>=bold text (place <B> before and </B> after text you want to appear bold)

<I></I>=italic (place <I> before and </I> after text you want to appear bold)

<U></U>=underline (place <U> before and </U> after text you want to appear bold)

You can add your Google Map to a PBWiki like this:
